I felt as one who poorly reads his lines,
And sadly understands them not at all.
Yet comprehends through all the telling signs
The joyous beauty flowing through the scrawl.
So was I when I heard “And I love you,”
The clemency of God flowing from your smile:
I could not understand your wish for us two
To become one; ‘tis true I wept some while
For I had thought that I had loved alone…
Then that eternal Mercy made itself known.
