Once, in this long and languid life of mine,
I felt my heart attempt to ‘scape my chest.
I felt delirious, as is with wine;
I was at peace as I went to my rest.
But Samaël was not the one who came,
But your appearance, bathed in holy light.
“You must make your unruly heart be tame,
And give it to the pleasure of your sight.”
And when I woke, I hurried to your hand
And gave my heart upon a golden band.
